The Sri Lanka Embassy in Egypt was originally in existence in the form of a legation established in 1957 and was subsequently upgraded to a full-fledged Embassy in 1958. This is the first Sri Lankan Mission established in the African continent. The Premises of the Embassy complex is owned by the Government of Sri Lanka and located at No. 8, Sri Lanka Street (old Yehia Ibrahim Street), Zamalek, Cairo, Egypt. The street where the Embassy is located was named after Sri Lanka Street in 1983. The Embassy is concurrently accredited to Concurrently accredited to: State of Eritrea, People's Democratic Republic of Algeria, Republic of the Sudan, Republic of Tunisia, Kingdom of Morocco and State of Libya. It has an Honorary Consul in Tunis, Tunisia.
The main role of the Embassy is to foster relations between Sri Lanka and the accredited countries while promoting Sri Lanka’s interests. The Embassy aims at promoting trade between Sri Lanka and Egypt with more focus on gaining access to the Egyptian market for Sri Lankan products such as Ceylon tea, spices, desiccated coconut, activated carbon, coco peat pneumatic tires, apparel etc. The Embassy is working closely with the tourism industries of both countries to further promote the tourism sector as Sri Lanka is becoming a popular travel destination among Egyptians.
One of the main objectives of the Embassy is to provide efficient consular services to the public. The Embassy has made provisions for Sri Lankans living/working and visiting to Egypt to register their details through the website.
